Like many first-time visitors to Nainital, I arrived with a list of the usual things to see. Naini Lake, Mall Road, viewpoints, temples and the surrounding hills were all on my itinerary. I assumed most of my time would be spent moving from one attraction to another.
Instead, I discovered Nainital through its food.
What began as a simple search for a warm cup of tea gradually became one of my favourite parts of the trip. I found myself exploring cafés, stopping at bakeries, trying local snacks, and spending long evenings wandering around the town. By the time I left, some of my strongest memories had very little to do with ticking attractions off a list.
The cafés changed the way I explored Nainital
I usually prefer starting my day early in the morning and covering as much as possible when travelling. But Nainital made me slow down. After an early walk near the lake, I would find a small café, order tea or coffee and sit for a longer duration than I had planned to. Some places offered beautiful views of the hills, while others were tucked into busy streets where I could simply watch people just go about their day. There was no urgency for finishing a drink and leaving.
I started looking forward to Nainital’s bakeries
The bakeries became another unexpected highlight of my stay. I started noticing the smell of freshly baked bread, cakes and pastries while walking across the town. One stop would lead me to another, and before long, finding something warm and freshly baked became a part of my everyday routine.
I tried simple pastries, cakes, buns and other baked treats with tea. Nothing felt overly elaborate, but everything seemed particularly comforting in the chilly hill-station weather.
Evening snacks became part of my Nainital itinerary
By late afternoon, I would usually get ready to explore Nainital’s street-food side.
The evenings brought a different energy to the town. After spending the day around the lake and nearby attractions, I would walk through the busier streets looking for something quick to eat.
Hot snacks tasted especially good in the cool weather. I tried different local favourites, from warm momos and roasted corn to crispy snacks and comforting cups of tea. Sometimes I didn’t even have a specific place in mind. I simply followed whichever street smelled the most inviting.
Nainital’s Mall Road felt different after sunset
During the day, Mall Road served as one of the places which I wanted to explore as a visitor. In the evening, it felt more like a place for just spending time.
The lights came on, the streets became more vibrant, and the food stalls started drawing more visitors. I enjoyed walking without having a particular destination in mind, and stopped whenever something caught my attention.
This was also when I understood the benefit of staying at one of the hotels in Nainital located close to the main areas. Being able to walk out in the evening, grab a snack and return without worrying about a long commute made the experience much more relaxed.
Breakfast became one of my favourite Nainital meals
My mornings in Nainital also started revolving around food. Instead of hurrying through breakfast so I could start sightseeing, I took my time with hot tea, simple Indian breakfast dishes and freshly baked items. The combination of cool mountain air and warm food made even an ordinary breakfast feel memorable.
On some mornings, I would sit near a window and watch the hills before heading out. It was a small change from my usual travel routine, but one that made the entire day feel less hurried.
I explored the town one bite at a time
What surprised me most was several things that I learned about Nainital by just eating my way through it.
Every café offered a different environment. The bakeries introduced me to familiar treats in a hill station setting, while the evening stalls provided a taste of the town’s vibrant side. Walking between these places meant exploring the lanes, shops and different corners of Nanital that I might have missed if I had followed a strict sightseeing itinerary.
I began to realise that a destination isn’t always experienced through its biggest attractions. Sometimes, it is the ordinary moments between them that stay with you.
Staying centrally made the food trail easier
Choosing the right accommodation also made a difference. When comparing hotels in Nainital, I found that staying close to the lake, Mall Road and other central areas made it easier to explore the town on foot.
I didn’t have to plan every café visit or evening snack early. I could simply step outside, walk around and decide where to stop. That freedom made my food discoveries feel spontaneous rather than planned.
Final thoughts
Before visiting Nainital, I thought I would remember the lake and mountain views most vividly. I certainly did, but the town’s cafés, bakeries and evening snacks became an equally memorable part of the trip.
I discovered Nainital slowly, one cup of tea, warm pastry and evening snack at a time. The food gave me a reason to pause, explore smaller streets and experience the town beyond its famous viewpoints.
Nainital has plenty of attractions that deserve a place on any itinerary. But if you have the time, don’t make your trip only about sightseeing. Walk around, find a bakery, sit in a café, try an evening snack and let the town guide you.
And when choosing between hotels in Nainital, consider staying somewhere that puts you close to the places where the town comes alive after sunset. Travellers can discover, just like me, that some of their favourite travel memories start with something as simple as deciding where to have your next cup of tea.
